The person of the Holy Spirit
John 16:12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.”
Jesus tells his disciples that he is leaving (John 13-17):
- John 13:33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come”
- John 13:36-37 “Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”
- Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”
- 37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
- John 14:2-5 “I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
- John 16:5 “but now I am going to him who sent me”
John 16:7 “But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.”
John 14:15-16 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever”
John 14:26 “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
John 15:26 “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.”
God has a plan:
- He sent Jesus into the world to deal with our sin problem
- He sends the Holy Spirit into our lives to help us with the rest of it.
In the Old Testament view of Holy Spirit:
1 Samuel 10:9-11 “As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul’s heart, and all these signs were fulfilled that day. When he and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him; the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he joined in their prophesying. When all those who had formerly known him saw him prophesying with the prophets, they asked each other, “What is this that has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”
Genesis 1:2 “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
Matthew 28:19 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”
In the church, in general, Jesus and God the Father get’s most of the attention:
- Most churches have a huge fear about talking about the Holy Spirit
- People talk about the Holy Spirit as being the power of God.
- The Holy Spirit is a real individual
John 16:12-15 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
Here is the progression:
- All that belongs to God is given to Jesus
- Jesus takes from the Father and gives to the Holy Spirit
- The Holy Spirit receives from Jesus and gives to us
Each member of the Trinity has different roles:
God the Father
- He is the sovereign Creator
God – Jesus
- He is the redeemer
- He was involved in Creation
- The head over the church
- He intercedes for us
Colossians 1:15-20 “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.”
God – Holy Spirit:
- The presence of God working in the world and believers
- He convicts people of sin
- Empowers the church
- Regenerates believers
The Holy Spirit is our:
- Teacher
- Advocate
- Guide
- Strength
1 Corinthians 6:19 “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;”
John 14:15-16 “If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever”
