Mothers Day Message – A Faith That Lives On

Background of 2nd Timothy Letter:

  • Paul is in prison in Rome
  • It is around 66-67AD
  • Nearing the end of his life
  • This is his last letter

2 Timothy 1:1-5 “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,

To Timothy, my dear son:

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”

Paul highlights two women:

  • Lois – Grandmother
  • Eunice – Mother

Paul is reminded of their sincere faith in Jesus that he now sees dwelling in Timothy.

Acts 16:1-2 “Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer but whose father was a Greek. The believers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him. Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.”

Timothy:

  • Mom is a Jewish Christian
  • Dad was Greek

Acts 14: 8-13 “In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth and had never walked. He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed and called out, “Stand up on your feet!” At that, the man jumped up and began to walk. When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!” Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.”

2 Timothy 3:14-15 “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures”

Where did Timothy learn about Jesus?

  • Not from Sunday school
  • Not from the pulpit
  • Not from Synagogue leaders
  • Not from a discipleship program
  • FROM HIS MOM AND GRANDMOTHER

This is the thing with seeds – It takes time for them to grow!

Some people are like this Talipot Tree:

  • Patience over decades
  • Faithfulness without immediate reward
  • A lifetime building for one moment of impact

Galatians 6:9 “Let us not grow weary in doing good”

but it leaves a mark that time can’t erase!
