Baptism in the Holy Spirit

Realize – The Holy Spirit’s dwelling within you and bearing fruit and gifts is GOD’S PLAN FOR YOU!
What are the controversies about the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
- What it is
- When it happens
- How it happens
- Speaking in tongues
- When does the Baptism of the Holy Spirit begin?
In this verse Paul focuses on work of Holy Spirit at salvation:
1 Corinthians 12:13 “For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.”
Ephesians 1:13 “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit”
Luke is talking about waiting for a second experience:
Acts 1:4-5 “On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
I believe both of these happen:
- Holy Spirit dwells in us and seals us when we are saved
- The Holy Spirit empowers us at a later encounter with Him
- Speaking in tongues
Is tongues the evidence for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
1 Corinthians 12:28-30 “And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? Now eagerly desire the greater gifts.”
What is ‘tongues’? A language that the Holy Spirit gives a believer that is a prayer from their spirit and not their mind!
1 Corinthians 14:14 “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful”
1 Corinthians 14:14 “Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves”

- Is speaking in tongues for today?
Many churches and Bible colleges teach that this gift is not for today:
- They have one verse that they use to support this
1 Corinthians 13:8 “Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away”
1 Corinthians 12:13 “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known”
Paul is talking about when we get to heaven!
What is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
Luke 24:49 “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Here is what Joyce Meyers says – You don’t need to be filled with the Spirit to be saved, but you need to be filled with the Holy Spirit to live saved.
How do we get Baptized in the Holy Spirit?
Luke 11:11-13 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Acts 1:4-5 “On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
This is a promised Gift from God the Father:
- I can’t make it happen
- Comes wholly apart from anything you or I do
How to get filled/ Baptized in the Holy Spirit:
- Ask
Acts 19:1-7 “While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit whenyou believed?”
They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”
“John’s baptism,” they replied.
Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. There were about twelve men in all.”
Some don’t feel like they deserve this gift. They say ‘I’m not good enough’
James 1:5 “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
