Overcoming Pride

We have been looking at the traps the devil tries to use in our lives to prevent us from growing in our faith & spiritual maturity.

Ezekiel 28: 12-17 “‘You were the seal of perfection,
    full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God;

every precious stone adorned you: carnelian, chrysolite and emerald,
    topaz, onyx and jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise and beryl.
Your settings and mountings were made of gold;
    on the day you were created they were prepared.

You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you.
You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones.

You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created
    till wickedness was found in you.

Through the multitude of trade you were filled with violence,
    and you sinned.

So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, guardian cherub,
    from among the fiery stones.

Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom
    because of your splendor.
So I threw you to the earth;
    I made a spectacle of you before kings.

Isaiah 14:12-14 “How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!
You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens;
I will raise my throne above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon.
I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.”

Pride is the first sin that entered the universe and the last one to be rooted out.  -Jonathon Edwards

James 4:1-3 “Where do fights and quarrels among you come from? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.”

James 4:4 “You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.”

James 4:6 “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

Proverbs 11:2: “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom”

Proverbs 8:13: “To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech”

Proverbs 16:5: “The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished”

This is what pride is:

  • Idolatry of self.
  • The worship of oneself.

“Pride consists in attributing to ourselves the honor, privileges, prerogatives, rights, and power that are due God alone. A proud person has put himself or herself in God’s place.”  -Wayne Mack

“A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above.” -CS Lewis

Micah 6:8 “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
