The Year of Jubilee
Three parts to Old Testament Law:
- Sacrificial Laws
- Cultural Laws
- Moral Law
“This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live.”
Four Feasts that say it is to be a lasting ordinance:
- Feast of First Fruits
- Feast of Weeks
- Feast of Atonement
- Feast of Tabernacles
Leviticus 23:28-31 “Do not do any work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the Lord your God. Those who do not deny themselves on that day must be cut off from their people. I will destroy from among their people anyone who does any work on that day. You shall do no work at all. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live.”
Three sabbath’s:
- Every week
- Sabbath year
- Year of Jubilee
Leviticus 25:1-6 “The Lord said to Moses at Mount Sinai, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you enter the land I am going to give you, the land itself must observe a sabbath to the Lord. For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops. But in the seventh year the land is to have a year of sabbath rest, a sabbath to the Lord. Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards. Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the grapes of your untended vines. The land is to have a year of rest. Whatever the land yields during the sabbath year will be food for you.”
Leviticus 25:8-10 “‘Count off seven sabbath years—seven times seven years—so that the seven sabbath years amount to a period of forty-nine years. Then have the trumpet sounded everywhere on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement sound the trumpet throughout your land. Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you.”

What happens on the year of Jubilee:
- The people and the land rest. No agricultural work is done.
- Debts are forgiven
- Land restoration – Land given back to it’s original owners.
- Emancipation – Slaves are set free
- Identity recovery – The poor are given back what they lost or sold.
Leviticus 25:18-21 “‘Follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws, and you will live safely in the land. Then the land will yield its fruit, and you will eat your fill and live there in safety. You may ask, “What will we eat in the seventh year if we do not plant or harvest our crops?” I will send you such a blessing in the sixth year that the land will yield enough for three years. While you plant during the eighth year, you will eat from the old crop and will continue to eat from it until the harvest of the ninth year comes in.”
Jews believe the Messiah will arrive in a Jubilee year and declare this freedom for the nation of Israel.
Luke 4:14-21 “Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.
He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, and He began to say to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
Luke 4:28-30 “All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. But He walked right through the crowd and went his way.” (see John 8:59 & 7:30)

I googled the date for when the Israelites entered the Promised Land
- Spring of 1406 BC was the overwhelming consensus
Math
- 1405 years BC
- 2025 Years after BC
- 3430 years
- Divide by 49
We are in the 70th Jubilee from when the original one was commanded.
