Questions To Ask For Good Decision Making
AS WE MAKE OUR DECISIONS OUR DECISIONS WILL MAKE US!
- Experts say that an adult makes on average 35,000 choices a day.
Types of choices we make:
- Day to day choices
- Relational choices
- Work choices
- Moral choices
There are reasons we have a hard time making the right decision:
- Limited ability to see the big picture.
- Emotions that lead us astray.
- A devil that lies and deceives us.
Four questions that we can ask ourselves that should ensure that we make consistent right/ healthy decisions.
Question # 1 – Does it please God?
Psalms 139:23-24 “Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Other questions to ask ourselves:
Am I motivated by a desire to fit in and get others to respect me?
Am I more concerned about what others think rather than what God thinks? (Most of us)
Am I feeling fear of “losing out”?
Question # 2 – Is this choice good for the people around you?
Galatians 6:10 “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
Other questions to ask ourselves:
Who will be affected by my decision?
Will it take time away from my family?
Is this the selfish choice that make it difficult on others?
Philippians 2:3-4 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
Question #3 – Is it well for your soul?
John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
Other important questions to ask:
Is the choice I am making doing a good job of keeping me connected with Jesus?
Does it help my relationship with God?
Will it bring me closer to, or take me further from God?
Ephesians 4:30 “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
Question #4 – Does it positively influence eternity?
Matthew 6:20 “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.”
Other important questions to ask:
Does it have an eternal perspective?
Are the choices I am making affecting eternity?
How will this decision impact someone else’s eternity?
These are usually choices that have to do with:
- Relationship with God
- Relationship with others
- Character choices
