Wonderful Counselor

Isaiah 9:6-7

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the greatness of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this.

Some translations break the word up:

  • Wonderful, counselor
  • Wonderful Counselor

Jesus is a Wonderful Counselor

  1. He understands our struggles

The thing about Jesus

  • He knows the Father and was involved in creating everything

Colossians 1:16

For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him

Hebrews 4:15

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.

Here is something that Jesus has an advantage with…

THE HOLY SPIRIT

  • Dwells within us
  • Is in full unity with Jesus

What happened to Jesus that helps Him understand?

  • Betrayed
  • Alone
  • Wrongly accused
  • Ridiculed, beaten
  • Doubted
  • Misunderstood
  • Used
  • Gossiped
  • Abandone
  • Suffered loss

Jesus is a Wonderful Counselor

  1. He understands our struggles
  2. He cares for us

We aren’t just a client giving Him money

Romans 8:38

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Jesus loves us even when we have very little to offer him

  • He is not into you for the money
  • He is not into you for the fame
  • He loves you more than anyone else can

Jesus is a Wonderful Counselor:

  1. He understands our struggles
  1. He cares for us
  2. He gives us the best counsel

Here is our challenge – To actually listen and apply the instruction Jesus gives to us

Isaiah 9:4-5

For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,
you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor.
Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,
will be fuel for the fire.

His counsel is perfect. Why?

  • He knows how everything works
  • He deeply cares and loves you
  • He knows the future and how things are going to work out
