Why Do We Do What We Do?
We have two primary needs
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
Jesus talks about setting people free from sin!
- Why do we seem to not live in complete freedom?
- JESUS CALLED IT A SLAVERY TO SIN
“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
- Jesus has set us free
- But we are quick to run back to what is familiar with us
WRONG THINKING LEADS TO WRONG FEELINGS WHICH RESULTS IN WRONG ACTIONS
- That apart from Jesus all are in slavery to sin
- Even in Christ tend to go back to what we are familiar with
2 Corinthians 3:16-18
16 But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
Three things that we have been set free from, and the first is:
1. Freedom from Guilt!
From 1 John 1:9 we learn that:
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us of all righteousness”
And Romans 8:1-2 proclaims “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death!”
The Holy Spirit will convict us of our sinful actions, but not hold us guilty of them
The second thing that we have been set free from:
2. Freedom from the power of sin!
Romans 6:23 tells us that “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
We are going to face consequences for our sinful choices, but we won’t have to pay the ultimate price for our sinfulness.
The third thing that we have been set free from is:
3. Freedom from ourselves!
How can this happen? The Apostle Paul tells us in Galatians 5:16 “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
And also in Titus 2:11-12 He tells us “For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age”.
So we see there are two keys to walking in the freedom God intends for our lives:
- walking in relationship with God
- following his Words/commands.
THIS IS WHY THE WORLD IS IN SUCH CHAOS
- We cannot teach it to change
- We cannot influence it to change
- We cannot force it to change
WE CANNOT CHANGE THE SLAVERY TO SIN THAT PEOPLE FACE
- APART FROM CHRIST THERE IS NO FREEDOM
- APART FROM CHRIST THERE IS NO TRUE FULFILLMENT
Four Freedoms envisioned January 6, 1941 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt
- Freedom of Speech
- Freedom of Religion
- Freedom of want
- Freedom of fear
