Who Is Master?

Who Is Master?

Genesis 1:28

God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

God’s plan for mankind

  • Increase in number
  • Subdue the earth
  • Rule over all of creation

God’s plan for mankind

  • Increase in number
  • Subdue the earth
  • Rule over all of creation

What are the things that has mastery over your life that God calls for you to be in rule over?

  1. We lack contentment

The prodigal son said

  • I want more
  • I want my way
  • I want something to make me happy

1 Timothy 6:6 For godliness with contentment is great gain.

What happens when you lack contentment?

  • We become more demanding
  • We want more than we have
  • We want things our way
  • We want something to make us happy

The problem is not with our situation. Our problem is within ourselves

  1. Destruction

Paul encourages Timothy to pursue godliness and contentment

1 Timothy 6:9-10

Those who want to get rich fall into a temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

What do you think Paul means when he says that these harmful desires for money plunges them in to ruin and destruction?

  • Away from God’s character
  • Away from God’s peace
  • Away from God’s plan

  • To measure value to an item
  • To measure value to the labor of a person
  • A way to conduct business that has the same rules

A Master

  • Makes all the rules
  • Determines right and wrong
  • Has all the power

1 Timothy 6:11

But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.

Paul tells us to pursue

  • Righteousness
  • Godliness
  • Faith
  • Love
  • Endurance
  • Gentleness

Paul is really saying we are to pursue Godly character instead of worldly values

1 Timothy 6:17-19

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in their wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasures as a firm foundation for the coming age, so they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

  1. God richly provides for our enjoyment

The prodigal son

  • Thought independence would bring him happiness
  • Thought money would answer the desires of his heart
  • Thought that his way was better than the father
