Under New Management

I have really enjoyed this series on breaking free from the “cycle of sin”!

Here are a few things that have stood out to me through this series

  • We all have sin living in us
  • The sin living in us is not necessarily evil decisions, but a desire to live life isolated away from God and not surrendered to Him.

The challenge is that some of these old ways we did things seem to cling on and not let go.

  • It isn’t easy to shake a sinful addiction
  • It isn’t easy to change a life habit
  • It isn’t easy to change living for yourself to living for God.

                Romans 6:11-14

11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.

Count – (In Greek) is a calculating term

To make a mental calculation.”

There are two things that we are to calculate true in this passage

  • We are dead to sin
  • We are alive to God

We have heard about having right thinking

  • Positive thinking
  • Possible thinking
  • Positional thinking

WE ARE TO COUNT OURSELVES TO BE WHAT GOD SAYS WE ARE

Positional thinking recognizes

  • That we are new creations
  • That we are dead to sin
  • That we are alive to God

                John 8:34

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin

                Romans 6:16-18

16 Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. 18 You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

We need to realize that we are people who are free from the enslavement of sin.

                Romans 6:12

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.

If we are not vigilant sin will seek supremacy in our lives

                Genesis 4:7

If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

                Romans 6:16

16 Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

Romans 6:12 “Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.”

Road SignsCaution - Under New Management

Caution – (6:12) – Count who you are in Christ

Road SignsStop - Under New Management

Stop – (6:13) – Stop letting sin reign in your bodies

Road SignsYield - Under New Management

Yield – (6:13)- Instead offer the parts of your body to God

There is only one way to escape the enslavement to sin

  • Jesus had victory over sin and death on the cross
  • As his followers we are partners with Christ to his death and resurrection
  • We have been given everything we need for a victorious life.
