Under Construction: Guarding our minds

John 8:44

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Here is the truth about our minds:

  • Steering wheel of our lives
  • It supervises everything that you do
  • It gives us the chemicals of love, fear, pleasure, pain

Romans 12:2 

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will

2 Corinthians 10:3-5

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

The Apostle Paul recognizes this invisible battle:

  • He tells us to renew our minds
  • He tells us to demolish every pretension against the knowledge of God
  • He tells us to take every thought and make it obedient to Christ

Definition of Pretense

  • An attempt to make something that is not the case appear true
  • A claim, especially a false or ambitious one

We are to demolish every…

  • Lie
  • False claim
  • False belief

The Bible gives examples of the fallen sinful mind:

  • Troubled mind – 2 Kings 6:11
  • Depraved mind – 1 Timothy 6:5
  • A sinful mind – Romans 8:7
  • A dull mind – 2 Cor. 3:14
  • A blinded mind – 2 Cor. 4:4
  • A corrupt mind – 2 Tim. 3:8

So how do we guard our minds?

 

  1. Don’t believe everything you think

We all have wrong thinking

Wrong thinking leads to  – Wrong feelings

Wrong feelings lead to – Wrong actions

 

  1. Guard your mind against garbage

The devil tempts you with junk thoughts

But his real goal is to lead you to the toxic thoughts

               

Proverbs 15:14

A wise person is hungry for knowledge, while a fool feeds on trash (NLT)

Philippians 4:6-8

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

The result – God’s peace will guard our hearts and mind

Don’t just resist the thinking – replace it

Third – Never let up on learning

We are called to be disciples of Christ

  • A disciple never stops learning
