Unanswerable Questions – Sovereignty vs Free Will

Unanswerable Questions – Sovereignty vs. Free Will

I want to start a new series on some unanswerable questions.

  1. Sovereignty of God versus man’s free will
  2. The Origin of Sin
  3. Incarnation – Jesus being fully God and at the same time fully man.

1. Sovereignty

Definition:

God is in absolute control

Nothing can happen apart from God determining for it to happen

Psalms 139:16 your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

Isaiah 14:24 Surely, as I have planned, so it will be, and as I have purposed, so it will stand.

Isaiah 46:10-11 I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do what I please… What I have said, that I will bring about; what I have planned, that I will do.

Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.

Ephesians 1:11 In Him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will.

Romans 9:14-21

Potential Problems:

  1. God created sin – Explore next week.
  2. Man has no such thing as free will – Double Predestination (John 6:44, Acts 13:48, Eph. 1:4-5).
  3. God determines every detail – Coin flip, who wins, who gets sick and dies.
  4. Irresistible Grace.

2. Free Will
Important foundation (Genesis 1:27)

Man has been made in the Image of God – Three possible ideas:

  1. Reason
  2. Relationship with God
  3. Dominion to rule over the earth

Definition:
“As bearing the image of God mankind has free will to choose for themselves.”

Matthew 11:28 Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.

Ephesians 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

1 Timothy 2:3-4 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

Hosea 11:1-2 When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. But the more I called Israel, the further they went from me.

Potential Problems:

  1. God is not in control
  2. Foreknowledge – 1 Peter 1:1-2, Romans 8:29

3. Potential Solution

Man has the freedom to choose with the exception of salvation.

John 6:44 No one can come to know Jesus without the Father enabling.

See Ephesians 1:4-5
