To Be A Leader Learn To Follow

1. Make A Fresh Decision to Follow Jesus

Many of us have made a decision years ago. But we can make a fresh decision. It’s a daily decision. Something that we’re renewing on purpose, and we’re saying “Lord, I want to follow you today.” “I want to find that path that you have for me, and that I’m committed to following you today.

Following means that I’m listening, and I’m hearing your voice and seeking your leadership and your direction. “

You may be at a place in your life where you don’t see any “Big Plans” ahead. But most of Gods plans have to do with people, not with changes of direction. Who’s coming into your life today? Who are you touching today? I need to be in the moment so that I make room for relationship with people – So this is Why we need to make a fresh decision to follow Jesus.

“I bought Linda (my wife) a GPS for Christmas. She had been admiring them, and she’s always afraid that we’re going to get lost. And I thought, just what I need, another woman telling me where to go. Anyway, I bought her one and then it got to be a game with me. Because I’d program in where we wanted to go, and I thought this is sort of fun and I would intentionally overshoot wherever it was telling me to go. It was going ‘Turn Right in 30 yards’. I’d just keep going, and then it would go ‘recalculating… recalculating…’

So then I would come back around, and I just loved messing with its’ mind – trying to make it ‘recalculate…’

And as I was thinking about my tendency to play games with our GPS system, I thought, ‘I sorta do that with the Lord, too. I mean, there are times when He’s always going, Here we go, Jim ‘recalculating… recalculating…’ That really wasn’t the turn I wanted you to take. You know… You turned left, and I was trying to get you to turn right. And so then I’ve got to recalculate.”

But again the whole goal of that GPS is to get you where you’re supposed to go. You put in a destination, there’s a path, and there’s a smart way to get there, and if you’ll just listen and follow, you’re going to find that you’re going to arrive where God called you to go.

2. Watch and Listen

We do have a father who loves us and He cares about our life. And He really does want us to arrive.

3. Close The Gap

If you find yourself following at a distance, just recognize it and make the adjustment. Close the connection.

But above all things, Don’t drift. You don’t want to drift and not even be thinking about staying connected.

4. Stay Together & Keep Moving

This is why we’re together today. I might not be able to see the path, but you help me see the path. And I help you see the path, too. And when I get off the path – You help me get back on the path. So I believe part of the genius of the Lord is to put us together in families. Scripture says, “Teach me your ways, O Lord. Your word is a light unto my feet, and a lamp unto my path.” So keep moving. We’re doing this together, and the Lord will lead you out to the other side.

1 Peter 5:2-4 – 2Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;  3Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being examples to the flock.  4And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, you shall receive a crown of glory that does not fade away.
