“The Gift that Keeps on Giving”
This slogan originated in 1925 with the Victor Talking Machine company who patented the phrase. But their patent ended in the 1960’s.
Since then many products have used this slogan.
- Organ donors
- Mother’s day cards
- Sports Illustrated
- Kodak Cameras
- Kitchen appliances
- and now United Way.
We all like the idea of “A gift that keeps on giving”
We have all experienced the Christmas gift cycle
• The anticipation
• The excitement stage
• The post present let down
JESUS WAS A GIFT WRAPPED FOR US
• Wrapped in cloth
• He is a gift that takes a lifetime to unwrap
2 Corinthians 9:15 “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!”
That is why I tell you this morning that the gift of Jesus will take you a lifetime to unwrap. You see it and think you know all that entails. You experience Him and you know things will never be the same.
You unwrap a layer and are blown away with the goodness and care that is found within each layer.
I think the gift of Jesus has an infinite amount of layers to it.
- We see from the outside what we think it look like
- The inside is different
- Each new layer is similar, but different at the same time
Compare this with the Onion
- Numerous layers
- But each of the layers are the same
With God each deeper layer holds a new revelation as to who God is and what He has to offer!
What are some of the layers that we get to discover
- This is like the outer layer of the onion
- This is what most people are seeking
- This is not the whole of the gift
2. Right Living
Why are the rules there?
• The rules keep us safe
• The rules keep us in right relationship
• The rules let us live as we were created to
God desires for us to walk in his character
• Not external actions
• Internal attitudes
4. Living Water
John 4:10 “Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” “
John 14:6 “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
John 15:5-6 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
6. Access to God
1 John 5:14-15 “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.”
• We have access to God
• We can have confidence approaching him
• He hears us and answers us of our requests
7. Greater understanding and wisdom
James 1:5 “If any of you lacks wisdom he should ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault.”
