Gift of Christmas

In Luke 2:8-15 the Bible tells us the story, ”And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

Today’s passage portrays a completely different witness to the birth of Christ:

  • They were shepherds
  • The second lowest class in Israel
  • They did not uphold the ceremonial duties of the Law
  • They were not trusted as acceptable witnesses in court
  • People saw them as liars and low life’s that could not be trusted

Luke 2:24 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those whom his favor rests.”

The King James version puts it this way:

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”  – Luke 2:14

The gift of Jesus is to

  • Bring peace on earth

We see this peace in 3 different areas:

1. Peace with God

When sin entered the world in the Garden of Eden the relationship between man and God was broken.

  • No matter how much we tried we could not get right with God
  • No matter how good we were we were separated from Him
  • God alone had to fix what we broke

“But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5

2. Peace of God

Philippians 4:6-7 ”Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

This was during the “Pax Romana

  • 27BC to 180AD Rome was free from wars outside itself
  • Yet it was during this time they had some of the greatest inner turmoil

3. Peace with others

It is impossible to be at peace with others if we can’t have peace within our own soul and mind

Romans 12:18 ”If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

You cannot rely on other people to be the bringers of peace to your life.

He was someone who was bringing peace

  • Peace between us and God
  • Peace within ourselves
  • Peace with one another
