The Foundation

Matthew 7:24-29

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

Observations

  • Storms happen to everyone
  • We only have control of how the storms of life will affect us.
  • JESUS IS MAKING A CLOSING STATEMENT

Subjects he addressed in Sermon on the Mount

  • Murder
  • Adultery
  • Divorce
  • Giving Oaths
  • Revenge
  • Loving your enemies
  • Giving to the needy
  • Prayer and fasting
  • Not worrying
  • Judging others
  • And being a wise builder

What Jesus does not say

  • More prayer
  • More studying of the Scriptures
  • More love
  • More forgiveness and acceptance of one another

HE SAYS THAT THE FOUNDATION OF OUR FAITH IS OBEDIENCE TO HIS WORDS

It is important to realize the purpose of the Bible

  • Not to inform
  • But to transform you

Hearing God’s word is being informed

Living out God’s Word is being transformed

What is a foundation?

  • First step in the building process
  • Most important step
  • Everything is built upon it
  • Sets the size, shape, and limitations of the building

Obedience to God’s Word provides a foundation for all the plans and promises of God to be built upon

James 1:22-25

19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.

What are the results of building a house on sand?

  • Corners sink
  • Wood cracks and breaks
  • Water washes the sand away
  • Listening to a sermon on the Bible is not enough
  • Reading the Bible is not enough
  • Living it out places your life on solid ground
