Role of the Church-Serving

Serving OthersRole of the Church-Serving

Church Purpose: Serving

We have already looked at these purposes of the Church:

  • Discipleship
  • Fellowship
  • Outreach
  • Worship

Today we want to look at serving.

Acts 4:32-37

”All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them

For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need. 36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.”

God gives the church a reason to live – FOR OTHERS

The purpose of the church we are focusing on today – SERVING

Matthew 20:28

”Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Today I am actually not trying to get us to act differently.

I AM TRYING TO GET US TO THINK DIFFERENTLY

  1. Service with our gifts

Romans 12:3-8

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Each member belongs to all the others

Physical maturity and Spiritual maturity are two separate issues

WE ARE TO USE THE GIFTS GOD HAS GIVEN US TO BUILD UP OTHERS

2 Timothy 1:6-7

”For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.”

  1. Service with our lives

“All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had”

Sharing is not a spiritual gift – It is what we are all called to do
