Psalms 23:2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul.
There are three things in particular that the shepherd does for his sheep in this passage.
1. He makes me lie down in green pastures.
There are four things that need to take place for the sheep to lie down. They need:
Freedom from fear
Freedom from torment of flies and parasites
Freedom from friction with other sheep
Freedom from thirst and hunger.
A theme that will be seen through all three of the sections in this verse is that the shepherd is doing what he needs to do so the sheep can have rest.
MAKES – This is a strong word.
Why is David using this word?
Sheep have the tendency to not rest.
Non rested sheep do not move or travel well.
AS A SHEEP
I NEED TO REST.
I NEED REFRESHMENT.
2. He leads me beside quiet waters
Thirsty sheep get restless –
and restless sheep are easily distracted or led astray.
There are three places that sheep get their water:
Dew on the grass early in the morning,
From deep wells, and
Springs or streams.
GOD KNOWS WHAT PLACE YOU ARE AT IN YOUR LIFE.
Dry and barren – start your day with him early in the morning.
Water available, but underground –Need Him to help provide.
Water a plenty, but need him to lead and guide to the safe place.
NO MATTER WHAT SEASON WE ARE IN, WE ARE INDEBTED TO THE SHEPHERD FOR LIFE GIVING WATER.
3. He restores my soul
How could anyone in the care of the Good Shepherd have a disturbed soul?
Psalms 42:11 Why so downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God.
God, our faithful shepherd restores us.
John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and life to the fullest.
• The devil steals from people (joy, health, peace, relationships)
• Jesus gives life and is able to restore what was once there.
Restores – replenish (Pantry, gas tank)
We need rest and we need restoration.
The Shepherd does everything we need, so that we can be at rest.
