How often do we misdiagnose a situation? Last week we looked at how we sometimes don’t do a good job of honoring:
- We are to honor God
- We are to honor our parents
- We are to honor one another above ourselves
See the story in Mark 6:1-6
Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.
“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing?
3 Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.
4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” 5 He did not do many miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of faith.
1. Sometimes Familiarity outweighs awe and wonder
As a result of their familiarity with Jesus they questioned his…
- Wisdom and where he got it
- Miraculous works
- He went beyond his families skill set and ability
When you are overly familiar with something or someone we have a tendency to devalue it
Do we feel so familiar with God that we don’t show Him the honor He deserves? Do we say or think to ourselves that:
- He is quick to forgive
- He is always with us
- He loves us unconditionally
- He is our friend/ Daddy
On the wall of a Cathedral in Europe are these words:
You call me Master and Obey me not.
You call me Light and See me not.
You call the Way and Walk me not.
You call me Life and Desire me not.
You call me Wise and Follow me not.
You call me Fair and Love me not.
You call me Rich and Ask me not.
You call me Eternal and Seek me not.
You call me Gracious and Trust me not.
If I do not Bless you, Blame me not.
2. Sometimes Human understanding outweighs faith
Their understanding of Jesus could not allow them to accept Him for who he truly was
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.
Matthew 7:24-29 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
What is that foundation?
- Hearing Jesus’ Word
- Obeying Jesus’ Word
1 Corinthians 1:23 “…but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles”
1 Corinthians 1:25 “For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength”
GOD IS NOT LIMITED TO OUR LAWS OF PHYSICS
A LACK OF HONOR BEGINS TO ERODE OUR FAITH
- It begins to devalue the valuable
- It begins to not believe the possible
Our familiarity make us strangers to the miraculous
