Praying for nonbelievers
Last week we looked at the Apostle Paul’s prayers and saw three themes:
- Paul prayed for wisdom, knowledge and understanding
- Paul prayed for power
- Paul prayed for righteous living
So that is a great way to pray for each other 🙂
BUT praying for someone who does not know Jesus is a little different…
Let’s start by looking at What exactly needs to happen in someone’s life before they can respond to His saving grace because:
2 Corinthians 4:4 tells us that “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”
So we have to realize that:
- people who do not know Him cannot see things properly
- You can explain things in a way that makes total sense to you… It won’t to them…
- They are blinded to the truth!
This is why it is so important for us to learn to pray for those who don’t know Jesus!
So… How do we Pray??
Let’s look at a few issues involved:
Ephesians 1:4-5 says that “he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will”
and Ephesians 1:1 lets us know that “In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,
So God chose people from the beginning of time. Two ways to look at it.
- God chose the people who are going to be saved
- God chose them based on his preknowledge of people’s hearts and prayers
1 Peter 1:1-2 “Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To God’s elect, exiles scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, 2 who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood:”
In this simple explanation of this concept of predestination I believe God knew our prayers and how people would respond.
1 Timothy 2:3-4 “This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”
God the Father
- He knows who is going to be saved
- No one can come to Jesus unless he gives them the ability
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
I BELIEVE THAT IT IS THROUGH OUR PRAYERS THAT GOD MOVES TO GIVE PEOPLE A GREATER ABILITY TO COME TO JESUS.
- Jesus role was the work on the cross
- He forgives people their sins
- He paid the price for our sins so we don’t have to
Holy Spirit’s role
And when He comes, He will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me.
The Holy Spirit is the one who convicts people that they are sinners
A PERSON WILL NEVER RESPOND TO GOD’S SALVATION PLAN IF THEY FAIL TO REALIZE THEY ARE SINNERS AND THEIR DESTINY IS DEATH.
Hebrews 1:14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?
Angels have a role in a person’s life that helps them to receive God’s salvation.
- They minister to those who will one day believe
Colossians 4:2-4 ”Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. 3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4 Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.”
- Paul tells them to devote themselves to prayer
- Pray that Paul may have opportunities to share God’s message
- And that Paul may proclaim it clearly
How it works
- Jesus died for our sins
- God gives people the ability
- The Holy Spirit convicts
- The angels minister
- We pray
- We share God love and truth
Why would God do it this way? Because everything he does comes through relationship and unity
We hope the Lord will bless you and those you pray for, that he will give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, that you may know him better and that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe!
