Praying for Believers

Paul gives a spiritual teaching about putting on our spiritual armor

  • Breastplate of righteousness
  • Helmet of salvation
  • Belt of truth
  • Feet fitted with readiness of the gospel of peace
  • Shield of faith
  • Sword of the Spirit

Ephesians 6:18  

                        ”And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

Paul’s six Prayers

Ephesians 1:17-19

                        ”I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe”

Ephesians 3:16-19

                        ”I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

Philippians 1:9-11

                        ”And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.”

Colossians 1:9-12

                ”We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, 10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father”

2 Thessalonians 1:11-12

                        ”With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith. 12 We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.”


Philemon verse 6

                “I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ.”

1. Greater understanding and knowledge

  • Know him better
  • Understand God’s hope and power better
  • Understand God’s love
  • Grow in knowledge and insight
  • May be able to discern what is best
  • Deepening your understanding of what we have in Christ
  • Filled with knowledge of his will through wisdom and understanding


Luke 24:45 ”He opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written…”

Matthew 13:19  ”When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path.”

John 8:44 ”You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

John 8:44 Says

  • Devil is a liar
  • No truth in him

So this main theme in Paul’s prayer is a fantastic place to start when praying for other believers

  • Understanding of God’s truth
  • Discernment to know God’s truth
  • Knowledge to know God and his ways
  • Wisdom to understand how to do it

2. Greater power

Paul repeatedly prayed for these people to be filled with God’s power

  • Strengthen you with power
  • Stronger in God’s love
  • Filled with God’s power
  • Strengthened with power so you can endure
  • God’s power fulfill every good work and act of faith

Power is a great prayer for people

  • So we can stand strong
  • So we can have greater influence
  • So we can destroy the devil’s work

Power without the first prayer emphasis is dangerous

  • Power without wisdom is dangerous
  • Spiritual giftedness without knowledge and discernment can also be a little scary

1 Corinthians 2:1-5 “And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God, For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.”

3. Pray for righteousness

  • Filled with righteousness
  • Bearing fruit in every good work
  • Live a life pleasing to God
  • Jesus glorified through your life

A few things that we don’t see in Paul’s prayers:

  • Money and jobs
  • Keeping them safe
  • Health
  • Families
