Pointing to the Cross – Sacrificial System

Many people wonder why the sacrifices of animals. Why would God want that?

  • God did not want that
  • God used it as a foreshadowing of what was to come

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love is

  • Patient
  • Kind
  • Always protects
  • Always hopes
  • Always perseveres

Genesis 2:17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die

God completely knows the destructive nature of sin

  • It takes all that is pure and corrupts it
  • It prevents things from working properly
  • It destroys right relationship with God
  • Sin deeply wounded all people

Leviticus 17:11

For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life

Hebrews 9:22

In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness

Hebrews 10:3-4

But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins, because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Hebrews 10:11

Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins

Hebrews 10:12

But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God

In a way you can say Jesus fulfilled all of the sacrifice categories

  • He was offered up as a first fruit
  • He provides a way for people to have peace and access with God
  • He provides complete forgiveness from sin and punishment

Hebrews 9:25-26

25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. 26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself

Hebrews 10:19-22

19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

Since we have this perfect sacrifice that covers all sins for all times we can

  • Come into his presence
  • Hold unswervingly to hope
  • Spur one another on towards love and good deeds

  • He was able to repair what was broken in the Garden of Eden
  • He was able to reconnect with the people He was separated from
  • He was able to destroy the devil’s work

1 John 3:8

The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work
