“For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven”
Who got hurt in the Pharisees system? The People
“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.”
“But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell”
There is a progression here…
What usually happens when someone gets angry? Something usually gets broken !
anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court.
“Raca” is a term that means – Empty head (We might say “Air head” today)
There is a progression here:
- Anger against a brother or sister
- Saying something mean
- Saying something that completely demoralizes someone
And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.
It doesn’t sound as bad as murder, but what is the end result?
- Someone gets hurt
- Relationship gets damaged
“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.”
YOU ARE TO INITIATE RECONCILIATION IF YOU HURT SOMEONE
1 John 4:19-21
“ We love because he first loved us. 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.”
“Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”
Things have progressed in this teaching:
- Don’t get angry
- Don’t speak out of your anger
- Don’t completely humiliate someone because of your anger
- Get right with people – before you worship or go to church
- Heal things – before the problem gets bigger
In God’s Kingdom
- Right relationship is more important than being right
- Good relationship is more important than looking good
