Pentecost – Happy Birthday Church

Happy Birthday Church

Pentecost “Happy Birthday Church”

Today is Pentecost – Pente means 50

  • 50 days after Passover (Easter)
  • Also a yearly feast the Jews celebrated
  • The Jews celebrate Pentecost representing the giving of the 10 commandments
  • Jewish tradition also states that this is the day David was born and died.

It is important for us to realize a few things about the church:

  • God created the church
  • God loves the church
  • God uses the church
  • God knows that the church is not perfect.

Often times the church operates like this:

  • They look like us
  • They act like us
  • We accept them

Instead the church ought to look like this:

  • We accept them
  • They may begin to act like us
  • They may begin to look like us

To accept the people without accepting the sin

What was God thinking when he made this plan called the church?

1. To be a light to the world

Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

  • We are to shine in this world
  • We are to let our good deeds be visible to all people
  • We are to let the love, joy, peace, and gifts of God shine out of us

What was God thinking when he made this plan called the church?

1. To be a light to the world

2. To use your gifts to build up the church

Acts 4:11-13 “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”

Doing God’s work is the central role of the church in this world

2 Corinthians 8Financially build each other up

2 Corinthians 8:13-15 “Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. 14 At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality, 15 as it is written: “The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.”

1 Corinthians 12 – Building each other up through our gifts

1 Corinthians 12:27-28 “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues.”

James 2 – Helping each other with our physical needs

James 2:15-16 “Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?”

Matthew 5 – Share with one another your time and possessions

Matthew 5:41-42 “If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.”

Here is a partial list of what the Holy Spirit does for the church:

  • Helps us to confess Jesus (1 Corinthians 12:3)
  • Empowers us to serve God (1 Corinthians 12:4-11)
  • Binds us together as the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-13)
  • Helps us pray (Romans 8:26)
  • Intercedes for us with God the Father (Romans 8:27)
  • Guides us (Galatians 5:25)
  • Helping us to live like Jesus (Galatians 5:22-23)

Happy Birthday Church! And May the Lord bless you as you fast and pray today 🙂
