Working with who we are – Our Calling

  • How do I know the path God has for me?
  • How do I know my calling and purpose?

  • Shepherd son
  • Sold into slavery
  • Improperly imprisoned
  • Life in the desert prepared him for the palace

  • Adopted by Egyptian

Here is our temptation:

  • We ascribe someone else’s sorrows to sin or God is against them.
  • We avoid hardship and suffering
  • We strive to be number one more than we strive to know number One.

We ascribe someone else’s sorrows to sin or God is against them.

John 9:1-3 “As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.”

We avoid hardship, suffering and difficulty at all cost

Acts 9:15-16 “But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”

Romans 5:3-5 “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us”

  • Suffering is a key component for our development of perseverance
  • It ultimately leads to character and hope

1 Peter 4:1-2 “Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin. As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.”

John Howard StorySuffering is instrumental in the purifying process of our life

Who knows how God is using difficulties to get you to:

  • Turn to Him
  • Rely on Him
  • Direct you to your calling in life

HOW DO WE FIND THE CALLING OR THE PATH THAT GOD HAS INTENDED FOR OUR LIFE?

First

– We need to understand God’s primary description of who and what we are

Second

– We must follow God for who He is and what He intends, and not for what we prefer

Third

– We must not be driven to be number one, but to know number one

Here is when you find your calling in life:

  • WHEN YOUR WILL BECOMES ALIGNED WITH GOD’S WILL.

Bad things and painful circumstances happen in life, but for a reason

  • Maybe to get you to persevere and develop the character you need
  • Maybe to direct your paths to places you never intended to go.
