Unanswerable Questions – The Origin Of Sin

As we are aware, the original sin in this world began with Adam.

See Romans 5:12 which says that “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned”.

Also See Genesis 3. This tells the story of the first sin in this world, but it is evident that this was not the first sin. Why? Because there was someone who tempted them! So, How did this being “Satan” get to where he was, and how did sin originate?

There are three main views.

  1. 1.    God created it

None of us here like this possibility, and it also goes against the scriptures.

Job 34:10 So listen to me, you men of understanding. Far be it from God to do evil, from the Almighty to do wrong.

Psalm 92: 15 The Lord is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.

Deuteronomy 32:4 He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.

So the scripture does not attribute the Lord with the ability to do wickedness. The people who profess this belief draw a line between saying that He allowed sin to happen and saying that He caused it to happen.

God created man in His image. So:

  • They have the ability to choose for themselves.
  • They can choose all the way to the point of not receiving salvation.
  • God did not want robots who followed a set program, but people who could choose Him.
  • So, God did not create sin in and of itself, but he created the possibility for it to happen.

2. Originated with the Devil

We see how the Lord created man with the ability to choose. Scripture suggests that angels have this same ability.

2 Peter 2:4 For God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment.

Jude 1:6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home – these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for the judgment on the great day.

1 John 3:8 He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.

This belief places the origin of sin on the devil. He has been sinning from the beginning and it is the reason that Jesus came to earth, to destroy the power of sin and death that the devil held.

The Problem

Why or how could someone who lives in a perfect world choose to sin?

We can see with Adam and Eve that someone tempted them! It is safe to say that they would have never sinned if not for the temptation from the devil!

What planted this temptation within the devil?

3. Originated somewhere else

This statement has the belief that something else apart from God and the devil was the origination of sin.

Yet Colossians 3:16 says that “For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.”

Scripture tells us that everything comes from God and nothing exists apart from him.

So this eliminates the possibility of sin originating from somewhere other than God and brings us back to our original point.

We may not be able to answer the question of sin’s origin while we are here on earth, but we can see the results of it.

–          Sin is absolutely destructive.

A movie opened this last week called “Contagion”. I think the premise is a worst case scenario of a deadly disease that is airborne.

Sin is deadlier and has had a much deeper affect:

  •       Body – We get sick and die
  •       Mind- we don’t think right
  •       Soul- We don’t feel right
  •       Spirit – disconnected from God
  •       Relationships – we are selfish and at times self destructive
  •       The final result is death

Sin is a deadly disease that has infected all of mankind. Nothing man could do to find a cure.

John 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of all lies.

The devil has been lying from the beginning. It is who he is and what he does.

How long do you need to do something before you become proficient at it?

–          A few years?

–          Ten years?

–          Thirty years?

–          How about 500 years?

–          The devil has been doing what he does for very long time.

–          We need our Lord Jesus to help us and save us from the devil’s work!

The Process of sin

Genesis 3:1-5

Verse 1 – Questions God and His commands “Did God really say?”

Verse 4 – Denies the Word of God “You will not surely die!”

Verse 5 – Questions God’s motives “God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened!”

These same lies can float around within our hearts and minds.

Yet sin is so much more than a pollution of our minds preventing us from thinking right. The rest of Genesis chapter 3 shows:

  •       A loss of innocence
  •       An unhealthy awareness of self
  •       A brokenness of relationship
  •       Physical curses and limitations

I might not be able to give a complete answer to the origin of sin, but I can say exactly what the cure for it is.

Jesus came as fully God and fully man (As we talked about last week) to have victory over the devil and open the door for us to enter into this same victory.

Jesus is the cure for the worst virus in the universe!
