Not part of the world
1 John 2:15
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.
What does “World” Mean?
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
- The lost are opposed to God’s Kingdom
- But these people are to be loved
- These people are the reason Jesus came into the world
44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous
What does “World” Mean?
- God’s Creation?
So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.
1 Timothy 6:17
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
1 John 2:16-17
16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever
The Word lust
Epithumia – desire, longing for, passion, lust
SEEKING AFTER SMETHING THAT MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD
16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want
Who do you feed?
- Feed the flesh sinful desires will get stronger
- Feed the Spirit and sinful desires become less
It is tough to be about God’s Kingdom when we keep feeding the desires of our flesh.
- Driven by sexual desires
- Sexual sin
Lust of the eyes
First lust was towards what feels good
This lust is towards the things that look good
Pride of Life
What does this mean? Self-satisfaction in who we are, what we have and what we have done
- Look at who I am
- Look at what I have
- Look at what I have done
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires
The things we love…
- Get our time
- Get our devotion
- Get our money
I call this the Demas effect
Our dear friend Luke, the doctor, and Demas send greetings
23 Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends you greetings. 24 And so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas and Luke, my fellow workers.
2 Timothy 4:9-10
9 Do your best to come to me quickly, 10 for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica
The love of the world
- seeks lustful gratification
- pursues the things that look good to them
- ignores God and accomplishes things on their own
14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
