Minor Prophets-Zechariah

Minor Prophets – Zechariah

Zechariah 1:1

“In the eighth month of the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah, the son of Iddo

Who is Iddo?

  • Iddo is one of the main Jewish priests in Babylon
  • He helped lead the people back to Jerusalem
  • He had a young grandson in tow on the way back (Zechariah)

Zechariah 1:2-4

“The Lord was very angry with your ancestors. Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Return to me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’ says the Lord Almighty. Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the earlier prophets proclaimed: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Turn from your evil ways and your evil practices.’ But they would not listen or pay attention to me, declares the Lord.

Zechariah’s message starts off similar to Haggai

  • Return to me and I will return to you

Zechariah has dreams of:

  • Red, white, black, speckled horses with riders
  • Man with measuring line
  • Flying scroll
  • Woman in a basket

Each time Zechariah has to ask an angel, “what am I seeing?”

The angel would respond:

  • Once again God will bless Israel
  • God will protect Israel
  • He will remove the sin from their land in one day
  • All the people of the earth will look to Jerusalem!
  • Our work is not by might, nor by power, but by God’s Spirit 🙂

Zechariah and Isaiah have the most to say about the Messiah:

Zechariah 2:7-10

“Come, Zion! Escape, you who live with the daughter of Babylon!” For this is what the Lord Almighty says: “After the Glorious One has sent me against the nations that have plundered you—for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye — I will surely raise my hand against them so that their slaves will plunder them. Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me.”

10 “Shout and be glad, Daughter Zion. For I am coming, and I will live among you,” declares the Lord.

Zechariah 9: 10-12

Rejoice greatly, Daughter of Zion!
Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim

and the warhorses from Jerusalem,
and the battle bow will be broken.
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
His rule will extend from sea to sea
and from the River to the ends of the earth.
11 As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you,
I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.
12 Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope;
even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.

There will be this Messiah figure to come:

  • He will raise his hands against the nations that have come against Israel
  • He will conquer world powers
  • He will bring peace throughout the world
  • He will free all the Jewish prisoners throughout the world
  • He will restore greater blessing to the Jews

Here is the challenge

  • Jesus came, but did not fulfill all the promises/ prophecies. Why?

The New Testament tells us that Jesus is going to come back again

This is a huge stumbling block for the Jewish people:

  • Some 400 prophecies about a Messiah
  • Jesus fulfilled over 350

Zechariah 9: 10-12

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!

12 Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope;
even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.

As far as we can tell:

  • Verse 9 – Triumphal entry
  • Verses 10 -12 – Second coming

Why doesn’t God communicate to us more clearly?

  • We would stop relying on Him

Zechariah 4:6

“So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.”
