First 2 Chapters

Oracles of calamities coming upon Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Judah and Israel

Amos 2:6-7

This is what the Lord says:

“For three sins of Israel,
even for four, I will not relent.
They sell the innocent for silver,
and the needy for a pair of sandals.
They trample on the heads of the poor
as on the dust of the ground
and deny justice to the oppressed.”

God gives Amos two Pictures:

  • Plumb Line
  • Basket of ripe fruit

First in Amos 7:7-8:

This is what he showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb, with a plumb line in his hand. And the Lord asked me, “What do you see, Amos?”

                “A plumb line,” I replied.

Then the Lord said, “Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.

Then next in Amos 8:1-2:

This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me: a basket of ripe fruit. “What do you see, Amos?” he asked.

“A basket of ripe fruit,” I answered.

Then the Lord said to me, “The time is ripe for my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.”

  • The last five verses talk about God’s restoration plans

Know this:

  • Not everyone will listen
  • Some will get angry at you
  • Always right to share the Word of God

Let’s look at what is making God so upset with the people of Israel

  • God’s anger at injustice

Amos 4:1

Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria,
you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy
and say to your husbands, “Bring us some drinks!”

Amos 5:10-12

10 There are those who hate the one who upholds justice in court
and detest the one who tells the truth.

11 You levy a straw tax on the poor
and impose a tax on their grain.
Therefore, though you have built stone mansions,
you will not live in them;
though you have planted lush vineyards,
you will not drink their wine.
12 For I know how many are your offenses
and how great your sins.

Amos 8:4-6

Hear this, you who trample the needy
and do away with the poor of the land,

“When will the New Moon be over
that we may sell grain,
and the Sabbath be ended
that we may market wheat?”—

skimping on the measure,
boosting the price
and cheating with dishonest scales,
buying the poor with silver
and the needy for a pair of sandals,
selling even the sweepings with the wheat.

God plans on holding people accountable for their ill treatment of others

A constant message throughout the Bible is to help those in need

1 John 3:17

“If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?”

Let’s look at what is making God so upset with the people of Israel:

  • God’s anger at injustice
  • God’s disdain for hypocritical lives

Amos 5:21-24

21 “I hate, I despise your religious festivals;
your assemblies are a stench to me.
22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings,
I will not accept them.
Though you bring choice fellowship offerings,

I will have no regard for them.
23 Away with the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.
24 But let justice roll on like a river,
righteousness like a never-failing stream!

God originally created us to…

  • Love
  • Serve
  • Look after each other
  • Look out for one another’s needs
  • Lift up one another
  • Help each other
