Minor Prophets – Hosea
“The word of the Lord that came to Hosea son of Beeri during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and during the reign of Jeroboam son of Jehoash king of Israel”
“When the Lord began to speak through Hosea, the Lord said to him, “Go, marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her, for like an adulterous wife this land is guilty of unfaithfulness to the Lord.” 3 So he married Gomer daughter of Diblaim”
They have three kids:
- Kid 1 – Jezreel – Soon punish the house of Jehu
- Kid 2 – Lo-Ruhamal – No compassion
- Kid 3 – Lo-Ammi – Not my people
“The Lord said to me, “Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another man and is an adulteress. Love her as the Lord loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes.”
”So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and about a homer and a lethek of barley. 3 Then I told her, “You are to live with me many days; you must not be a prostitute or be intimate with any man, and I will behave the same way toward you.”
God’s call to Hosea parallels one of the biggest themes of the Bible:
- God created man
- Man rebelled against God
- God paid the price for mankind
Seven mini sermons:
- Listing of sins
- The pronouncement of judgment
- The call to repentance
- The promise of restoration
THERE ARE CONSEQUENCES FOR GETTING OUTSIDE OF GOD’S PLAN
”But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
“For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.”
This is God’s desire with us:
- Relationship is more important than obedience
- God is not looking for programmed robots
THIS IS CHRISTIANITY:
- To learn to lovingly walk in relationship with God
- To choose Him over any other option available
“When Israel was a child, I loved him,
and out of Egypt I called my son.
2 But the more they were called,
the more they went away from me.
They sacrificed to the Baals
and they burned incense to images.
3 It was I who taught Ephraim to walk,
taking them by the arms;
but they did not realize
it was I who healed them.
4 I led them with cords of human kindness,
with ties of love.
To them I was like one who lifts
a little child to the cheek,
and I bent down to feed them.”
“How can I give you up, Ephraim?
How can I hand you over, Israel?
How can I treat you like Admah?
How can I make you like Zeboyim?
My heart is changed within me;
all my compassion is aroused.
9 I will not carry out my fierce anger,
nor will I devastate Ephraim again.
For I am God, and not a man—
the Holy One among you.
I will not come against their cities.
