James 1:19-20 ”My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires”

This passage tells us to take note of this. Why?

  • It is important
  • Don’t forget
  • It applies to all of us
  1. Everyone should be quick to listen.

Why do we fail to effectively listen to people?

  • We don’t care
  • We don’t have the tools
  • We are too consumed with ourselves or other things

Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments”

Romans 12:3 ”Do not think of yourselves more highly than you ought

Romans 12:10 ”Honor one another above yourselves

Philippians 2:3-4 ”Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others”

James 1:22 ”Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

We can deceive ourselves by not following the ways of the Word

Poor listening will always lead to frustration and mistake prone living

  1. Be slow to speak

Why do people like to talk?

  • To be heard
  • To get what they want
  • So they don’t have to listen

Proverbs 10:19 ”Where words are many, sin is not absent.

Ephesians 4:29 ”Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

What is unwholesome talk?

  • Sarcasm
  • Rude remarks
  • Things that you wouldn’t say around your five year old

Proverbs 18:21 ”The tongue has the power of life and death. Those who love it will eat its fruit

  • You have the ability to speak life into someone
  • You have the ability to speak death into someone
  1. Slow to Anger

Why should we be sow to anger?

  • Anger hurts others
  • Anger is not acting in love
  • Anger prevents us from bringing God’s peace into a situation

James 1:21 Because human’s anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires

James 1:21 “Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

Slow

  • To Speak
  • To anger

Quick

  • To listen
  • To rid of sin
