Ephesians 6:1-3 “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
Matthew 15:8 “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.”
Malachi 1:6 “A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me?” says the Lord Almighty.

- A worker is to honor their boss
- A worshiper should honor God
Malachi 1:13-14 “When you bring injured, lame or diseased animals and offer them as sacrifices, should I accept them from your hands?” says the Lord. 14 “Cursed is the cheat who has an acceptable male in his flock and vows to give it, but then sacrifices a blemished animal to the Lord. For I am a great king”

Malachi 2:1-3 “And now, you priests, this warning is for you. 2 If you do not listen, and if you do not resolve to honor my name,” says the Lord Almighty, “I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honor me.

Definition of honor –
To put value on something
There are three places we are to place honor:
- Honor your father and mother (Ephesians 6:2)
- Honor one another above yourselves (Romans 12:10)
- Honor God with your bodies (1 Corinthians 6:20)
HONOR IS TO BE THE NORM IN EVERY RELATIONSHIP WE HAVE!
Matthew 23:5-7 “Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; 6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; 7 they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others”
HONOR IS NOT SOMETHING YOU TAKE. IT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU GIVE
Matthew 13:53-58 “When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there. 54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. 55 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?”
57 And they took offense at him.
But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.”
58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.
Things to remember:
- We are to show honor to everyone we have relationship with
- Honor is something given, not demanded for
- There are consequences for not properly honoring
