Ephesians 5:1-21

This morning we talked about commitments. We talked about right actions.

The Bible does not paint the same picture as our culture paints.

1. Giving ourselves up.
Imitate God.
Live a life of love.
Follow Jesus example of sacrifice.
The Bible does not paint the same picture as our culture paints.
Here is the picture that the Bible paints for us to live.
We are called to serve (Mark 9:35).
We are called to lose our life and only then will we find it (Matt. 10:39).
We are called to be less (John 3:30).
We are called to be last (Mark 9:35).
We are called to be humble (James 4:10).
We are called to give to others (Luke 6:30).
We are called to deny self (Luke 9:23).
Luke 9:23-25 Must deny himself and take up the cross daily.
Saves his life when he loses it.
John 12: 23-27 Two different concepts offered here in this passage.
Be fruitful – God called us to go and bear fruit (John 15). You can be fruitful in life and not die.
Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains a single seed. But if it dies it produces many seeds.
You can be fruitful in life and not still go far enough in your commitment to Christ.
Fruitfulness and reproducing are different concepts.
2. Move on.
Ephesians 5:3-9
We must move on from how we used to live.
Sexual immorality.
Greed.
Obscene talk.
Foolish talk.
Coarse joking.
3. His will
Ephesians 5:10-17
Find out what pleases God.
Understand what the Lord’s will is.
That is dependence. Not my will, but your will be done.
