Emotional Health: Freedom From The Past

1. Generational Sin

•        The Bible teaches us that we are born into sin.

•        Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all have sinned

•        Adam sinned, thus we all have sinned.

•        We are born into sin

•        It is passed down to us through our parents

•        Exodus 20:5-6 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of their fathers to the third and fourth generation

•        Biblical Examples

A. King David

•        Isaac showed favoritism to Esau.

•        Jacob showed favoritism to Joseph

•        James 1:14-15

•        Own evil desire entices

•        Desire gives birth to sin

•        Sin grows and brings death

2. Past experiences

A. Our parents have taught us how to respond and act in certain situation.

•        Things we learn from our parents

•        How to handle difficulties

•        How to communicate

•        How to spend your money

•        Attitudes, control issues, laziness

B. Past experiences that have influenced us.

•        Failures

•        Evil events

•        Broken relationships

3. Steps to Freedom

•        There are three different kinds of past situations to deal with here.

•        Generational sins

•        Ways parents taught us to behave

•        Choices from our own past that hinder us in the present

•        There are different things that need to be done to address each issue.

A. Generational sin

•        Pray for God to heal and forgive the generational sins

•        Choose correctly

•        Exodus 20:5-6 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of their fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commands.

B. Taught behaviors

•        Examine your own past and ask yourself some questions:

•        How was spirituality expressed?

•        What was considered successful?

•        How was conflict handled?

•        What were the gender roles and how did authority work out?

•        What kinds of addictions existed?

•        How was conflict handled?

Compare these answers to the Bible or the actions of someone with Godly character.

Determine what was healthy and what was unhealthy.

If you could change something what would it be and what would it look like.

C. Past Choices

•        Things that happened to you

•        Choices that you made

Need to forgive

•        Forgive yourself

•        Forgive others
