Dont Let the Past Affect Your Future

Don't Let the Past Affect Your Future

Don’t Let the Past Affect the Future

WHY DOES IT SEEM WE LEARN MOST QUICKLY FROM AREAS THAT ARE LEAST IMPORTANT?

& Why do we have a tendency to repeat the mistakes (Not learn from) the areas that matter most?

Couple of myths:

  • Experience makes me wiser
  • Since I know better I will do better

Genesis 3:6-13

6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”

10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”

11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

Adam and Eve hid.

Sin wants to hide

WE DON’T WANT TO MAKE THE SAME MISTAKES IN THE PRESENT AS WE DID IN THE PAST

  1. Own our contribution to the problem

Us

  • We tend to put sin in our pocket to hide it from everyone
  • Thus we carry it into our future

Blame is never the answer

  • WE CANNOT BLAME OUR WAY INTO A BETTER FUTURE
  • BLAME ALLOWS US TO SMUGGLE OUR ISSUES INTO THE FUTURE
  • BLAME SETS US UP FOR THE SAME FUTURE

To make sure your past does not sneak into the future you must own your part of the disaster

TO MAKE PEACE WITH YOUR PAST TAKE OWNERSHIP OF YOUR PIECE OF THE PAST

  1. We must rethink how we think

Romans 12:1-2 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

We cannot change our actions without changing our mind

RENEWING MEANS TO RESTORE

ONCE WE RENEW OUR MINDS

Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

IF WE THINK THE WAY WE USED TO THINK WE WILL LIKELY ACT THE WAY WE USED TO ACT

Seven wrong relational assumption

  • If I find the right person everything will work out
  • My situation is unique
  • It’s not right, but it makes me happy and God wants me to be happy
  • If only I had, then I would be happy
  • I owe is better than I want
  • My secret is safe with me
  • Sex will solve it

How to make sure the next time will not go the same as last time

  • Must own our dysfunction
  • Must renew the way we think

Question

  • How far into your future do you intend to carry your issues or the problems from the past?

Question

How long do you plan on allowing the people that hurt you in the past to influence your future?

How to make sure the next time will not go the same as last time:

  • Must own our dysfunction
  • Must renew the way we think
  • Let it Go

Ephesians 4:26 “In your anger do not sin

Ephesians 4:26b “Do not let the sun go down on your anger

Ephesians 4:27 “Do not give the devil a foothold

Your unforgiveness gives the devil a foothold in your life!
