Dead Men Walking

We have been exploring some of the lesser known miracles that took place the day Jesus was crucified on the cross. First was the darkness that came over the land from noon until 3 pm. Second was the ripping of the curtain that separated the holy place from the holy of holies.

Today we explore the miracle in Matthew 27:52-53: “and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.”

We will focus on what the text tells us.

Holy people

Many

Two stages

The first stage they rose from the dead

The second stage they came into Jerusalem after the resurrection of Jesus.

1. Salvation is linked to the cross

•Only through Jesus is the power of sin and death broken.

Devil

•The devil was probably “throwing a party”.
•He thought that the cross was the end point for Jesus.

When did he realize that something was up?

•When the darkness came on the land. Did he see the sin of the sinners being heaped on Jesus?
•When the curtain was torn? Did he recognize God’s presence no longer abiding in the earthly temple?

When some of those within his grasp slipped out of the grave?

When Jesus arrived in hell to preach to the captives (1 Peter 3:18-20)?

When Jesus rose from the dead?

2. Jesus is the giver of life

Ephesians 2:1-5

We were all dead and without a hope

Because of what He did we have life in our spirit

What does an unspiritual life look like?

Following the ways of the world (Verse 2)
Gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature (verse 3)
Following our sinful natures desires and thoughts.

BUT…

•Because of His great love for us
•Because of His rich mercy
•WE ARE MADE US ALIVE WITH CHRIST!

With is the important word.

We are made alive with Christ. We are not alive apart from Him.

3. Your faith is not in vain

IT IS NOT A WORK THAT YOU ARE DOING THAT GOES FOR NOTHING.

Fortunately our relationship with Jesus does not just pay off when we die. There are lifelong benefits to walking with Jesus.

Forgiveness
Peace
Hope and direction
Love
Health

Our faith in the cross is not in vain.
