Controlled by Fear and Anger

Why would we be afraid to walk through a minefield?
• Fear of the unknown
• Fear for the potential loss of life
1 Kings 19:1-9 “Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” 3 Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.
All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” 6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.
7 The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. 9 There he went into a cave and spent the night.

Elijah has a few options
• Trust God and keep doing what God is asking him to do
• Run in fear

Why do we fear?
• Don’t want to lose something
• Don’t want to get hurt
• Afraid of the unknown
• We don’t trust God

Isaiah 41:10
So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand

Romans 8:14-15
14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship

PEOPLE WANT SOMETHING AND SOMETIMES DON’T CARE WHAT IT IS GOING TO TAKE TO GET IT.
James 4:1-2
What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight

What are we going to do with these desires within us when we want something we are not getting?
• Let it go
• Try to sweet talk
• Demand it as a higher priority than everyone else’s
• Get angry to get what you want

Why do people get angry?
• Injustice
• Impatience
• Strife
• Abuse
• Unmet needs or desires
• Jealousy
• Mistakes we make

I am a big fan of boundaries!
• Healthy relationships have boundaries
• Clearly communicated boundaries tell others what can and can’t happen

Healthy Boundaries
The Bible gives us clear boundaries. Why?
• To keep us safe

IT IS USUALLY NOT AS IT SEEMS.
