Admit You're Wrong?

Confess

Confess

Last week Pastor Paul asked us to look at what we are aiming for:

  • We read an article that discusses what it means to be a man.
  • One of the items was “to be able to admit that they are wrong“.

I don’t think this is just a man thing… How about it ladies… We all like to win and be right don’t we?

Right? None of us like to confess that we are wrong.

Today let’s take a look at this concept of “confess”:

  • Greek Word – Homologeo
  • Homo – Same
  • Logeo – To Speak

The literal meaning of the word is “to speak the same thing”

1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

THERE IS POWER IN AGREEING WITH GOD

Matthew 18:19 “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.”

James 5:16 “Confess your sins to each other and pray so that you may be healed”

1 Timothy 6:12 “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”

As we can see there is power in agreeing with God:

  • Ask of him and it will be done for you
  • Be healed
  • Receive salvation

MOST CONFESSIONS:

  • Confess the action done

More important:

  • Confess the motive behind why we did it.

Confessing is a much deeper process than stating your sin:

  • Stating the heart condition
  • Stating the wrong thinking
  • Stating the selfish motivations
  • Stating how we are off from God’s way

Isaiah 43:25 “I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.”

1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

BUT FAILING TO CONFESS OUR SINS

WILL ERASE THE POSSIBILITIES OF THIS PASSAGE

God is Faithful:

  • He is right on time
  • He is ready and waiting to forgive

Four questions of confessing:

  1. How honest am I willing to become?
  2. How do I view the God I am confessing to?
  3. How will God see me after I confess?
  4. How will I see myself after I confess?

Psalms 32:5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin.”

BOTH GOD AND PEOPLE COVER SIN

  • God covers it with the Blood of Christ
  • People like to cover it with pride and deceit

Two types of sins:

  • Commission – The wrong acts I committed
  • Omission – the right things that I did not do
