Paul’s Prison Epistles – Colossians

Paul’s Prison Epistles – Colossians

Acts 19:10

This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord

Colossians 2:8

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy.

  • Don’t handle this
  • Don’t touch that
  • Don’t taste this

Similarities between Colossians and Ephesians

  • Ephesians – focuses on the body of Christ
  • Colossians – focuses on the head of the body

Like Ephesians Colossians has clear halves

  • 1st half doctrine
  • 2nd half practical

Colossians 2:2

I want you to know how hard I am contending for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ

Paul’s goal

  • Be encouraged in heart
  • United in love
  • Full of understanding
  • Know Jesus

How God sees us

  • Pure
  • Without blemish
  • Blameless
  • Free from accusation

Jesus is

  • Fully God
  • Fully powerful
  • Fully in charge
  • Fully accomplished the work he came to do

The work Jesus wants to do in us

  • Bring us to maturity

Colossians 1:28

He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ

The work Jesus wants to do in us

  • Bring us to maturity
  • Fill us with His fullness

Colossians 2: 9-10

For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.

The work Jesus wants to do in us

  • Bring us to maturity
  • Fill us with His fullness
  • Freedom from human rules
  • First half looks at the supremacy of Christ
  • Second half looks at submission to Christ

Colossians 3:1-2

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things

Colossians 3:12-14

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

  • Put off your old dirty clothes
  • Put on the new clothes that God has given you

Colossians 2:14-15

14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

Here is what Paul is saying

  • Christ is fully God and in charge of all things.
  • He has purified us
  • He intends to grow us into maturity filled with his power
  • Since he has done all of this for us, let us choose to
  • live a lifestyle that reflects the purpose that he has for us
