Church Community

In Ecclesiastes 1:9 the Preacher said,

“What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.”

But there were two new creations after the resurrection:

  • One is a believer that has the Holy Spirit dwelling within them
  • Second is a church that is not based upon nationality

How many people were in the upper room during Pentecost? About 120

Acts 2:42-44

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.

The church was created to be in community

Acts 2:42-47

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.

45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved”

So “the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”

WHAT WAS THE SITUATION THAT CREATED AN ATMOSPHERE WHERE THE LORD WAS ABLE TO ADD TO THEIR NUMBER DAILY?

First, in community people…:

  • Spend time with each other
  • Share with each other
  • Learn and grow together

And next in Ephesians 4:11-13 we learn that:

“Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ”

So Paul’s perspective on the church:

  • You have each been given gifts and abilities
  • Use it to build up the church
  • Until we all reach a unity of the faith
