Build the Church
Have you ever seen the disclaimer on TV warning you not to try this at home?
For example: Do NOT strap a rocket to a car!!
-OR- Do NOT jump a bus 100 feet
Fortunately we don’t have the same disclaimer with the Bible. We get to try the best that we can to put God’s Word into action.
Matthew 7:24-27“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Ephesians 4:11-16″So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”
There are some common phrases or themes that reoccur throughout this passage:
- Build up to maturity
Our goal is to build up God’s Kingdom
- Through People
- With love
- With the gifts the Holy Spirit has given us
11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
- Too tired to serve
- Been there done that
- Doing the same thing the same way
- Quick to give
- Quick to volunteer and serve
- Want to teach others
Keys to growing:
- Going to church regularly
- Read the Bible
- Read other books to challenge you
- Devote time to prayer
- Worship Jesus
Ephesians 4 shows us how we as a church are to grow into maturity:
- Serving each other with the gifts God has given us
- Speaking the truth in love to one another
