Addictions – Don’t go back!

“If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning”            2 Peter 2:20

In this country we have:
60 million smokers
40 million people visiting porn sites regularly
15 million show signs of gambling addictions
8 million eating disorders
3 million cocaine addicts
14 million use marijuana monthly
14 million alcoholics

Defininition of Addiction  – the word comes from the Latin term for “enslaved by”

God’s plan – For us to be conformed to his image

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son”
Romans 8:28-29

God’s Priority – For us to change our thinking

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind”
Romans 12:2

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Philippians 4:8

God’s Purpose – For us to walk in the Spirit

“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh”
Galatians 5:16

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free.”
Galatians 5:13

“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything
1 Corinthians 6:12

•Feelings of enjoyment
•Reinforcement to motivate us to do certain activities

•Drugs alcohol, and nicotine can produce 2 to 10 times the amount of Dopamine instantly

What are things that we can get addicted to?
•Drugs                    Sex
•Alcohol                  Hoarding
•Nicotine                Gambling
•Food                      Exercise
•Eating Disorders  Work
•Pornography        Entertainment
•Shopping               Video Games
•Caffeine                 Anger
•Sports                    Laziness

Addictions are generally things that feed our sinful nature:
•They hijack our brain
•Produce intense and instant Satisfaction

How do we help or overcome addictions?
• Admit we have a problem

•Love independence from God
•Love sinful things
•Love pleasure over responsibility

There is a spiritual component to all of this:
•Prayer – Has the power to heal

“The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ”  2 Corinthians 10:4-5

There is a spiritual component to all of this:
Prayer – Has the power to heal
God’s Word – God’s Word changes the way we think

How do you know you are addicted to something?
Crave it
Loss of control over its use
Continue involvement with it despite adverse consequences

How do we help or overcome addictions?
Admit we have a problem
Ask for help
Replace the bad with good
Remove Triggers
